2010 Season Notes (June)

Until something unexpected happens, we are feeling very good about the garden this year.  We are ahead of the game with spinach and radishes ready to harvest.  This week's hot spell helped move things along, including some weeds, but we are managing them well so far.

This year we will plant beans, peas, corn, carrots, radishes, beets, broccoli, cabbage, zucchini, swiss chard, lettuce, turnip, parsnips, summer squash, winter squash, garlic, popcorn, and onions.  most of which is already in the ground.  Strawberries were transplanted last fall, so we are expecting a decent harvest this year.  If last year was any indication, we should have strawberries in June and again in August.

We are hope to plant an herb garden this year and trying celery, eggplant, kale and kohlrabi just for something different.

The new section of field that was harrowed and planted with oats last year is looking good.  The oats are a natural fertilizer for this new plot of ground. We haven't decided what to plant in that field yet, but we'll post it here when we decide.

Hope your gardening is going well.  Drop us a line at news@greenthumbsupply.com and let us know what your garden is looking like.

We will be closed July 4.

Any day is a good day to check out the farm, since Doug is almost always here.  There are several projects that need to be completed, so if you are interested in bartering some labor for veggies this season, give us a call at 207-966-1221.

Things to do include weeding, planting, picking, and when all else fails and there is nothing else to do, we spend time picking rocks out of the field.

The barn is still standing--well, mostly.  I kept thinking the winter storms would take the rest of it down. As much as I hate to see it go, not having to take it down ourselves wouldn't be all that bad!

So we still have a lot to do to bring the property up to where we'd like to see it, but for now, our focus is on the garden.  Stop by and see what we're doing here.  Maybe you will be inspired in some way to use fresh, local produce.
